The Beautiful Woman Buried Deep Inside of Me

I am not a dancer. I don't have the body for it. I don't have the coordination for it. I don't have the grace for it. But circumstances landed me among Latinos who danced. One said to me that it was "algo de la sangre".. something in the blood, and that I just didn't have it. I tried anyway, but I lacked the basic belief that I would ever overcome the limitations that came with my body. After taking many classes and workshops and lessons, I still wasn't much better at Salsa. I got...

    Where to Practice?

    "Hi, Edie
Could you please direct me? I have just found a partner and we are trying to figure out where we could practice Salsa. What's our best bet? Clubs may not be very conducive for practices, and dance floors may be very expensive (or not?) I live and work in Stamford, CT and she lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan. Thank you for your help, regards

    "Dear Edie,
I am not exaggerating when I say I spend 10-15 minutes on-line at a time just to get mail etc. but when my curiosity took over and I started reading about you and your dancing tips and everything I was truly astounded! You are really in tune with the people. I spent over an hour on the Dancer Hangout site, which is unheard of for me, fully enjoying every minute of it! I live and breath Salsa myself and recently found a partner through the partner search in my area

Take Private Lessons to Get Better!

You're at a Salsa club, you ask someone to dance, and they say... "Uh... No..., thank you."

It DOES NOT mean the following:
    • You're ugly
    • You smell bad
    • You're too short
    • You're too fat / tall / skinny / etc...

It just may mean that you don't lead very well (if you're a guy), or you are too crazy out there to let them control you (if you're a woman) My advice to ANYONE who goes out partner...

Need to Study Moves, but Don't have a Partner?

    Guys Corner:

If you don't have a partner, are alone, and need to practice your moves...

    "Create" a Partner:

    • Practice with who ever is around. Sister, mother, teacher, friend, big rag doll, big dog, cat...
    • Use a swinging door to practice hand and body placement.
    • Use the door knob as one of the girl's hands, and practice your cross-body leads.
    • Swing the door to the left as you would move a woman's body.
    • Use a wall to practice

    MORE ON SWEAT...

"Dear Edie, I was wondering if you have any tips or comments on the subject of SWEATY MEN!!! Recently I have had several unpleasant experiences of dancing in class and at clubs with men who seem like they have just taken a shower- but let me tell you, they don't smell like it! I understand that clubs and dance studios may be hot and poorly ventilated, but I think I speak for all women in asking the male salseros of the world to PLEASE, PLEASE WEAR DEODORANT!!...

Can you explain what a CUBAN MOVE is???...it's the hips isn't it?..."
    - non-Cuban"

    Dear non-Cuban,
It’s called Cuban motion. It’s the unique ability to dance, moving upper body from side to side (from your rib cage) while keeping your hips, rear, and legs relatively still (not bouncing up and down nor rocking back and forth, nor moving) I explain how to do and tech Cuban Movement in my Salsa Syllabus volume 1 DVD. You can rea...

Thank you for the Beginner's Corner

Edie, I don’t really have a question. Just wanted to let you know how reassuring it is to read the stuff in the
Beginners Corner. Learning Salsa has been a struggle. I thought there was something wrong with my “musicality” but then I learned of musicians that arrange Salsa and can’t dance to their own music. So this is hard stuff and on more than one occasion I have been ready to quit but right now I’m on an all out attack using no fewer than four instructors
