Dancing On-2: Also known as in some New York circles as... New York Style "On-Clave" Dancing

    AAAAAaaaaahhhh...
The never-ending argument of the elusive "Clave",
    Meaning "Key"...
the Key to Freedom to break on whatever the heck you want...

    Uh Oh... I said it!!!

    Oh NO!!!
    Shoot me now!!!

    Make me die NOW,
before I suffer the WRATH of the "2-3" Clave Purists!!
(I still and always will love you Manny and Steve!)

If you REALLY THINK ABOUT IT...
    The Clave is a Five
    Count ...
so what are we doing stepping on Six
    counts of the music phrase?

(...standing tall and firm, chin up, arms at her side, eyesclosed, with pride and dignity... The FREAK said, "I am prepared to DIE!! Take me NOW!!")

I am so sick and tired of people trying to ram the concept of "Dancing on Clave is called Dancing On-2" down our throats. If you really think about it, and want to get technical, the Clave is five beats, so who on earth decided to ad an extra step in there to make the dance a six-step, kind of halfing and "cheating" on a Clave rhythm. Hm? Think about it!

Click here for all the different ways you can dance "On-2"...
    Don't get me wrong...
    I ADORE dancing on "2" - that's when I'm dancing to the 2-3 Clave!

    AND.... Get this...
I also ADORE dancing on "1" - that's when I'm dancing to the 3-2 Clave!

There are so many different Clave beats, that if you truly, truly danced to the Clave, you would break both on the "one" for a 3-2 Clave, and then you could also decide to break on the "two" for a 2-3 Clave. (Rumba or Son Claves) These are only two types of Claves... THERE ARE OTHERS!!!

Mr. Ray Biss has put together an awesome, Awesome AWESOME website describing the different Clave Rhythms.
In fact, his site is so good, our management team has decided to award Ray our very prestigious WEBSITE OF THE YEAR AWARD!!

... His website describes all the different Clave rhythms and even has midi sounds to help you in your never-ending learning journey of this wonderful Latin beat.

Salsaweb's most prestigious award for Excellence in Content and Design goes to Mr. Ray Biss. Website address: http://www.formedia.ca/rhythms/1clave.html

Remember, that truly dancing to the Clavehttp://www.formedia.ca/rhythms/1clave.html, would be FIVE steps in an eight count measure - NOT SIX STEPS.

    I'VE TRIED IT!!!
I've actually danced Salsa with a couple of partners to the PURE Clave RHYTHM of FIVE STEPS.

    IT'S COOL!!!!
    YOU SHOULD TRY IT!

Step exactly to the Clave rhythm. You'll see, it's a five count. If you listen carefully, depending on the song, sometimes the Clave starts on the "one", sometimes it starts on the "two"... and ... sometimes it starts on the "three"... listen very carefully,

... you will be SHOCKED and AMAZED...
Then... grab your partner, and TRY DANCING TO THE FIVE CLAVE COUNTS!
    IT'S FUN!!!
That's why I say... Honestly. WHO REALLY CARES????????? As long as you're having FUN dancing out there, and you follow your partner on whatever beat he places you on, you'll do just fine, and have a BLAST dancing!
And you when dance "MUSICALLY" - To the Hits and Breaks of the SONG... One and Two is an OLD ISSUE.

Side Note: Many of you wonder why I capitalize the word "Clave". It's because I respect it. [B] I also always capitalize the word Salsa. The capitalized Salsa, is not a sauce...

I am not a dancer. I don't have the body for it. I don't have the coordination for it. I don't have the grace for it. But circumstances landed me among Latinos who danced. One said to me that it was "algo de la sangre".. something in the blood, and that I just didn't have it.

I tried anyway, but I lacked the basic belief that I would ever overcome the limitations that came with my body.

After taking many classes and workshops and lessons, I still wasn't much better at Salsa. I got better at Bachata, which raised my overall level of confidence, but I was still awkward at Salsa. Edie's classes, though, changed my head. I started dancing while repeating Edie's words in my head about how women should carry themselves. I was styling...

      "Hi, Edie
Could you please direct me? I have just found a partner and we are trying to figure out where we could practice Salsa. What's our best bet? Clubs may not be very conducive for practices, and dance floors may be very expensive (or not?) I live and work in Stamford, CT and she lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan. Thank you for your help, regards
... Looking for a place to practice!!! "
Dear Looking... You can rent space per hour at a dance studio, or if you are absolutely broke (like I was), you can get to nightclubs an hour or so before they open - the restaurant-bar types. Just start practicing y...

      "Dear Edie,
I am not exaggerating when I say I spend 10-15 minutes on-line at a time just to get mail etc. but when my curiosity took over and I started reading about you and your dancing tips and everything I was truly astounded! You are really in tune with the people. I spent over an hour on the Dancer Hangout site, which is unheard of for me, fully enjoying every minute of it! I live and breath Salsa myself and recently found a partner through the partner search in my area that is a dream come true. We practice EVERY DAY! My question is (Finally!!) I've danced On 1 all my life and am finding it very difficult to master On 2. Should it be easier for me to get On 2 as opposed to a beginner starting On 2? What video would you recommend for an advanced Salsero/Mambero to master the On 2 style? I'm really desperate here! I live in M

Take Private Lessons to Get Better!

You're at a Salsa club, you ask someone to dance, and they say... "Uh... No..., thank you."

It DOES NOT mean the following:
      • You're ugly
      • You smell bad
      • You're too short
      • You're too fat / tall / skinny / etc...

It just may mean that you don't lead very well (if you're a guy), or you are too crazy out there to let them control you (if you're a woman)

My advice to ANYONE who goes out partner dancing, is to take PRIVATE lessons - not just a group class - from the best recommended instructor in town. Take JUST ONE at first, before you decide on a package deal. You will find, that a Quality instructor will IMMEDIATELY...
