    "Hi Edie,
I've just started to learn Salsa. I think I've managed to learn the basic steps. The 2 big problems I'm having right now which is kinda preventing me from going further are
    1. Knowing when to break out
    2. Recognizing the beat in the music.

I know that you need to keep in tune with the sound of the clave instrument to dance Salsa. But I can't recognize this sound from the rest of the music! Any suggestions? Is there any place on the web or some audio file that has this sound. Or alternatively, could you add audio effects to the animated steps on your web site.
    Thanks a lot...

    Dear DS,
The beat will match your heart. Once a song matches your heart rate, you will FIND IT!!! And you won't need to even TRY!!!

    My advice:
STOP TRYING SO HARD TO FIND THE BEAT!!! Simply "relax"... and it will come to you through your subconscious.

Listen to Salsa music 100% of the time. In the shower, while at work, in your car, at night before you go to bed, when you wake up in the morning, all that. ALL THE TIME.
After a while, you will (and without even trying) suddenly start to hear the "rhythm" in the form of a "pulse" that will match your heart rate.

You cannot control it, but it will come naturally. Your heart will jump on that twirling merry-go-round of Salsa Music and its Rhythms... and fine-tune itself with your soul.
Your heart "must catch it" - it will be a tune that matches the EXACT BEAT of your heart. That is why you must listen to it all the time... your heart has to "catch it...!!!" The more you listen, the more your heart has a chance TO MATCH THE PULSE of the song!!!

    You watch. It's true.

When your heart beat catches that rhythm, it is a "day" you will never forget.

I have my BBS instructors learn and teach their students how to find the first beat of Salsa music as part of their Purple Belt Training program.

Here are a few sites that I show them as well - it is part of the BBS Cloud:

      "Dear Edie,

I'm so glad I surfed and surfed the web until I finally found DancerHangout.com! I never knew there was so much information for Salsa freaks like me, by Salsa FREAKS like you. I was reading your "Off beat" letters of concern regarding people who have no rhythm. My story is similar and would like some advice.

About 2 years ago I began learning Salsa. My boyfriend knew a little more than I did, so we went to a Grupo Niche dance (I'd never heard of the group at the time) in [my city] and basic-stepped our way through the night. It didn't take me long to get the latest moves down behind my boyfriend's back; I would practice with my older brother every time we had the chance. I was a fast learner, by brother said, because I was a good...

"Dear Edie, I have a major problem. My life partner is a competent dancer but lacks confidence and when I try to help her improve we end up having arguments on the dance floor as she claims I'm too much of a perfectionist and that I take it too seriously. I have several female friends with whom I have a good spontaneous rapport on the dance floor where we're able to be really creative, sometimes exciting and even magic. I know my partner would never reach that standard as she is not as addicted as I am. My dance partners have husbands or boyfriends back at home who allow them space to practice their art as I suppose their relationships are secure enough. I am unable to convince my partner that my relationship with these other ladies is restric...

      "Dear Edie,
I read your story and found it most interesting because I am in a situation somewhat similar to yours. My partner and I have been dancing Salsa for a little over a year, we have horrible fights. We have participated in local competitions and have won, but I think this is because our audience is mostly anglo. I would like to improve my Salsa dancing but I can't find qualified salsa teachers or professionals in my area, and my partner can't hear the music, I am his ears!. I need a good partner but they are hard to find. I love dancing so much that I feel confident that if I had a good partner, I would choreograph my own dancing and come up with my own moves. I feel the music inside of me. Any suggestions besides just "keep dancing"?
